The Seven Sorrows of Mary ...Published by TAN Books and Publishers

This booklet explains many things about Our Lady's Sorrows that most Catholics
have never even thought about. Drawing on Sacred Scripture and holy traditions
derived from the lives and sayings of the Saints, this booklet outlines the Four
Special Favors promised to those devoted to the Sorrows of Mary. Plus, it lists
the Seven Promises made to those who meditate on Our Lady's Tears and Dolors.
Also included are many prayers to the Sorrowful Mother, such as the Stabat Mater,
the Litany of the Sorrowful Mother, and seven beautiful prayers to be said while
meditating on the Seven Sorrows. Particularly highlighted is the special help
that Our Sorrowful Mother brings to her devotees at the hour of their death –
which is the most decisive moment of one's entire life.

Pope Pius VII approved series of prayers in honor of the Seven Sorrows
for daily meditation in 1815:

Seven Prayers in Honor of the
Seven Sorrows of
The Blessed Virgin Mary


V: O God, come to my assistance;
R: O Lord, make haste to help me
V: Glory be to the Father.....
R: As it was in the beginning....

(The Hail Mary is prayed a total of seven times:
once after each of the Seven Sorrows prayers.)

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among
women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary,
Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death, Amen

First Sorrow - The Prophecy of Simeon
1. I grieve for you, O Mary, most sorrowful, in the affliction of your
tender heart at the prophecy of the holy and aged Simeon. Dear Mother,
by your heart so afflicted, obtain for me the virtue of humility and
the gift of the holy fear of God.
Hail Mary........

Second Sorrow – The Flight Into Egypt
2. I grieve for you, O Mary most sorrowful, in the anguish of your most
affectionate heart during the flight into Egypt and your sojurn there.
Dear Mother, by your heart so troubled, obtain for me the virtue of
generosity, especially toward the poor, and the gift of piety.

Third Sorrow – The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple
3. I grive for you, O Mary most sorrowful, in those anxieties which tried
your troubled heart at the lost of your dear Jesus. Dear Mother, by your
heart so full of anguish, obtain for me the virtue of chastity and the
gift of knowledge.

Fourth Sorrow- Mary Meets Jesus on the Way to Calvary
4. I grieve for you, O Mary most sorrowful, in the constrenation of your
heart at meeting Jesus as He carried His cross. Dear Mother, by your heart
so troubled, obtain for me the virtue of patience and the gift of fortitude.

Fifth Sorrow- Jesus Dies on the Cross
5. I grieve for you, O Mary most sorrowful, in the martyrdom which your
generous heart endured in standing near Jesus in His agony. Dear Mother,
by your afflicted heart, obtain for me the virtue of temperance and the
gift of counsel.

Sixth Sorrow- Mary Receives Jesus
6. I grieve for you, O Mary most sorrowful, in the wounding of your
compassionate heart, when the side of Jesus was struck by the lance before
His Body was removed from the cross. Dear Mother, by your heart thus
transfixed, obtain for me the virtue of fraternal charity and the gift
of understanding.

Seventh Sorrow- Jesus is Placed in the Tomb
7. I grieve for you, O Mary most sorrowful, for the pangs that wrenched
your most loving heart at the burial of Jesus. Dear Mother, by your heart
sunk in the bitterness of desolation, obtain for me the virture of diligence
and the gift of wisdom.

V. Pray for us, O Virgin most sorrowful
R. That we made be worthy of the promises of Christ

Let Us Pray
Let intercession be made for us, we beseech You, O Lord Jesus Christ, now
and at the Hour of our death, before the throne of Your mercy, by the
Blessed Virgin Mary, Your Mother, whose most holy soul was pierced by a
sword of sorrow in the hour of Your bitter Passion. Through You, O Jesus
Christ, Saviour of the world, Who with the Father and the Holy Ghost lives
and reigns world without end. Amen.

highly recommended when she appeared in Rwanda, in Africa, as Our Lady of Kibeho
